TROUBLESHOOTING
Something needs attention
Start with the exact message shown in the StudyStride side panel. The steps below preserve saved evidence whenever possible and avoid broad account or browser changes.
The extension or side panel does not open
Open Chrome’s Extensions menu and confirm StudyStride is present and enabled.
Pin StudyStride, then select its toolbar icon again.
Open
chrome://extensions, find StudyStride, and choose Reload.Return to a normal browser page and reopen the side panel.
If an active session existed, StudyStride should attempt to restore it. Do not remove the extension or clear Chrome data while trying to recover retained local evidence.
The microphone check fails or no speech is captured
Confirm the intended microphone is physically connected, powered, and not muted.
At setup, choose the named microphone instead of System default microphone.
Confirm Chrome and macOS allow microphone access for StudyStride/Chrome.
Close conferencing, recording, or audio applications that may hold exclusive access to the device.
Start again and speak continuously during Checking microphone — speak now….
During capture, inspect the displayed microphone name and connection status. StudyStride treats an ended track, missing sample heartbeat, silence, or serious duration mismatch as incomplete evidence instead of reporting a successful transcript.
The browser source cannot be captured
- Open a normal
httporhttpspage. Chrome settings, the Chrome Web Store, extension pages, and other protected internal pages cannot be captured. - If Google Slides / Drive is selected, make the intended Slides or Drive presentation the active tab before starting.
- For GitHub, dashboards, articles, browser IDEs, PDFs on ordinary sites, and other content, choose Any browser page.
- If Chrome says
activeTabor<all_urls>permission is required before capture starts, make the source page active, click the StudyStride toolbar icon once, and retry Start capture. If this happens after navigation during a capture, click the toolbar icon once and wait for the screenshot count to advance; the existing audio capture continues. StudyStride requests access to that selected site rather than permanent access to every website. - Keep the authorized tab active when selecting Capture current view.
- If you changed to an unrelated tab, return to the intended source instead of assuming StudyStride followed you.
Automatic visual capture is not selecting views
Confirm Capture visual changes automatically is selected.
Move to a materially different slide, page region, code view, or browser state and pause briefly.
Watch the capture status/count for confirmation.
Use Capture current view when the state is important but visually similar to the preceding one.
StudyStride rejects duplicate states and limits retained images. It does not record a continuous browser video or save every scroll position.
Stop & review is taking a long time
StudyStride must finish the audio boundary, run complete transcription, remove overlap duplicates, and validate capture integrity. It generates questions only when you selected that option. Longer sessions require multiple bounded transcription requests.
- Keep the workflow open while the status says it is listening, processing, transcribing, or checking a saved result.
- Do not repeatedly choose Stop or reload the extension.
- If an error appears, copy the exact text before dismissing it.
- Use Recent sessions & data to resume or open the saved session after reopening the panel.
Google Doc or Drive actions fail
Confirm Chrome is signed into the Google account that created or selected the session document.
Retry the action and complete Google’s consent screen if it appears.
For Choose existing, select a document you can edit and that the Google account is authorized to access.
Open the selected document directly and verify it has not been deleted or moved out of your access.
After a successful append, use Open Google Doc to verify the content rather than repeatedly adding it.
StudyStride uses per-file authorization for files you create or select and does not store the short-lived access token. A session’s summary Doc, transcript Doc, audio backup, and PDF are distinct files.
The PDF or audio file is unavailable
Capture Report PDF
- Confirm Keep key screenshots was enabled before capture.
- Leave at least one retained image selected.
- If you changed or deleted a frame, choose Prepare capture report again.
- Wait for background preparation to complete before downloading or opening the Drive copy.
Audio
- Confirm Keep audio was enabled before capture.
- Check that the capture passed microphone and duration integrity validation.
- Use the Review step to preview the direct microphone input and processed transcription input separately.
- If a local copy was deleted, the private Drive backup may still be available; local deletion does not recreate a removed file.
Gemini Notebook setup cannot continue
- Approve the AI summary and add it to the session Google Doc before starting the wizard.
- Paste a specific notebook URL, not the general Gemini Notebook home page.
- Add the Drive Docs and upload the local PDF/WAV manually in Google.
- Return to StudyStride and confirm a checklist item only after completing it.
- If Google is still importing a source, wait and verify it in the notebook; StudyStride cannot inspect import status.
StudyStride cannot read or modify a consumer Gemini Notebook. A completed checklist records your confirmation, not independent verification from Google.
Storage is insufficient or an older session is missing
- Expand Recent sessions & data and choose Refresh sessions.
- Delete older sessions only after verifying required exports.
- Delete individual local images or audio copies you no longer need.
- For future sessions, turn off unnecessary retention before capture.
- Do not clear Chrome site/extension data if you still need locally retained evidence.
